UGA’s Odum School of Ecology names scholarship in honor of Rutherford Seydel

Posted by DPSS Legal on 11.16.15

The University of Georgia’s Odum School of Ecology (“School”) has created the Seydel Award in Sustainability and Conservation in honor of Rutherford Seydel’s service to the School as founding chair of the Odum School IDEA Advisory Board (“Board”). The School and the Board have been significant actors in making the University of Georgia a more sustainable campus. This new scholarship is one of the largest available to undergraduate students in the School. DPSS has served as a platform for many sustainability projects, and is proud to support the education of future environmental leaders.

In fact, Rutherford Seydel worked with UGA law interns to frame the initial concepts of the Office of Sustainability (“Office”) during the important and successful campaign by the students that resulted in a majority vote for a nominal green fee to fund the Office. The Office has created exciting opportunities for UGA and its students on campus, and students are educated and prepared on how to help maintain these important and vital sustainable efforts throughout their careers. One way graduates can continue these efforts, that DPSS also nurtures, is by participating in the nationally-leading Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge once they join the workforce.
