Partners Rutherford Seydel and Josh Marks represented Ted Turner in the charitable transfer of Turner’s 4,680-acre St. Phillips Island near Beaufort via a bargain sale to the State of South Carolina. As the largest privately held island off the coast, St. Phillips was sold for $4.9 million, about one-third of its appraised value. The South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism will manage the island, and the new park will complement nearby Hunting Island State Park. The pristine Lowcountry island is surrounded by marsh and beach, and a conservation easement held by the Nature Conservancy limits further development on the island.
